Cell Phone Plans For Seniors

George asks…
Just a cell phone?
What company if any makes a cell phone with a big key pad, no bells and whistles. This is for a senior citizen that is far sighted and hearing impaired. Just a plain simple phone. I know the jitterbug has one from Samsung, but the phone plan is horrible. All I need is the phone and pick my own carrier.
Thanks,

Thomas answers:
If you don’t like the jitterbug plan, then try getting the phone and unlocking it. I’m not sure but i think they use sprint towers so you should be able to use that phone on sprint.

how to tell my mom i want to ask my girlfriend to marry me?
My girlfriend and i have been going out for 2 years and i love her more than anything. we are both 21. I am a senior in college for mechanical engineering and i don’t want to get married til after i graduate and get a job, but i want to ask my girlfriend to marry me. my mom is overprotective and wont give me up easily. for example i want to get a cell phone plan with my girlfriend so i told my mom and she got upset. how should i tell my mom i want to ask my girlfriend to marry me.

Thomas answers:
Well, is your mother controlling or do you think that she just doesn’t like your gf? Maybe it’s the latter, and she was hoping that your gf is a “phase” and that you’ll “get over her” once you move on.
I would definitely suggest that you at least do as you planned, and WAIT to marry until AFTER you graduate and get a job. And I’d suggest that you wait to ask her, too.
Why? Well, in spite of how you feel now, you might feel differently once you _are_ out, in the real world, rather than being in the crucible of college (which in some ways is a repeat of the crucible of high school, which isn’t a great place to make these decisions; the cheerleader who seems so fantastic in HS may pale when she’s actually viewed in a more sane light and compared with a wider pool of potential gfs/wives).
I am not denying the reality of your feelings; I am saying that feelings and perceptions around them change. Personally, I think that most people really can’t give “informed consent”–in terms of deciding who can or cannot have access to one’s body–until they are around 24 or so…in part because of hormones and because, for instance, girls/young women are very easily influenced by older guys.
This is a huge step and an important one. You can change majors, jobs, careers, and you do a lot of thinking and working towards THOSE…so why not slow things down just a _little_ to make sure that your perceptions of your gf are the same when you get out into the real world as they are now when you are “just” in college…? You really do NOT want to change wives (ask anyone who has ever divorced; huge emotional cost, as well as financial and other costs).
I know that’s not what you wanted to hear, but please listen to a fellow engineer and planner.

Michael asks…
A cell phone for grandma?
I need to find a cell phone for my grandmother. She’s very big on talk so one of those senior walkie talkie “do-hickies” just don’t have plans to accomadate her need to speak. No need for an SOS button… she’s perfectly capable of dialing 911. One thing’s for sure – her vision is not what it used to be, so enlargeable screen and text fonts would be a godsend. She knows how to text pretty well with the numeric keypad as she is not completely out of the loop it’s just a matter of the buttons being big enough for her to read the letters. A camera is a must. And the screen must be large enough for her to recieve and show off pictures of the grandbabies. She really likes red and burgundy, but black or silver will do. Also, she is a fan of sliders & flip phones. Absolutely no touch screens please, they give her a migraine lol! A bonus feature would be fm radio. I honestly don’t expect to find everything in one phone, but any suggestions would be a BIG help.

John asks…
If I were to go to a different state for a weekend would by parents be able to tell by our cell phone bill?
I’m planning to take a trip for a weekend and don’t want to tell my parents because they’ll say it’s dumb and a waste of money.. but I’m a senior in college so I want to do these things while I can. But they still give me money and pay for my cell phone (and don’t want them to cut me off), so I’m wondering if they can see if I’ve gone somewhere a few states away from any information that will be on our cell phone bill? Thanks for any info!

Thomas answers:
Turn off roaming

Laura asks…
Can someone answer some questions about Japan?
I’m writing a story that I guess in a way is like a manga, but no pictures, and of course, it takes place in Japan. I’m from California, and, um, incase you haven’t noticed, the U.S is probably pretty different then Japan. So some questions?
1. In most mangas I’ve read, the seniors graduate in spring while the rest stays the same. WTF? What kind of system is that? Wait, I think I’m confused.
2. Do all families have those “main houses” and the branches meaning less important family members or only the rich?
3. Do the Japanese have the same style as us Americans? Like t-shirt and jeans and stuff like that?
4. Are the stores the same? Like Hollister, Claires, Old Navy, Aeropostle, Sears, stuff like that?
5. Do they have pasta such as pizza or ravioli there? Because I usually hear about bentos, fish, and sushi there.
6. How does the government thing work? Like do they have a president like we do, or royalty like England?
7. They have all the same video game consoles, right?
8. Do they all have to wear uniforms in school?
9. What do they learn in grade 9, 10, and 11?
10. How many years of elementary there?
11. Junior high?
12. High school?
13. Are singers like Taylor Swift or Kelly Clarkson known there?
14. Are there any shows like American Idol or Britain’s Got Talent there?
15. Anything like MTV?
16. Do they have the same brands of cell phone things as we do as in Nokia, iPhone, Samsung, stuff like that?
17. What about their cell phone plan? Do they have different ones or do they use Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and stuff like that?
18. Do you think this is to many questions?
LOLOLL so yeaaa. Thanks for your answers ^.^

Thomas answers:
Seriously, you should spend like 5 minutes on Google or Wikipedia. You could get answers to most of your questions there, and you can get a lot more details on all of your questions than anyone can provide here. I’ll take a stab anyway.
1) The school year runs from April-March. There are short breaks in the winter and spring, and about a month off in the summer, plus Sundays and various national holidays (Saturday usually doesn’t have classes but might have club activities).
2) I actually have no idea what you’re talking about, but it sounds like something historical. Most modern families live in nuclear households just like in the West, and some might life in larger multi-generational households, but the houses actually look fairly Western.
3) For everyday wear the majority of Japanese wear Western-style clothes, but the fashions are very different. You need to do a search for some pictures to see what I mean.
4) Yes and no, Japan has its own brands, though of course they are often similar to Western brands. I have seen GAP stores in Japan, and I’m sure it’s possible to find places that sell at least some items from brands like Hollister, particularly in cities like Tokyo (but I live in a much smaller city so I haven’t found stuff like that here yet).
5) Of course they do.
6) Wikipedia. Seriously, it’s too complicated to tackle here.
7) Like the Wii and Playstation? I believe so, yes.
Not in elementary school, and I believe every so often you stumble upon private schools at higher grades that don’t require uniforms. But most students have uniforms.
9) The same basic subjects as anywhere else in the world, plus of course Japanese.
10) 6
11) 3 (also, this is the end of compulsory education in Japan; high school is optional)
12) 3
13) Of course they are.
14 and 15) No idea, I don’t watch TV, but I would assume so.
16) I know the iPhone is here, but otherwise I’m not sure. Japanese cell phones operate on a different…network, or something, than Western phones. I had to activate a special setting on my Blackberry to use it in Japan.
17) Japan has its own cell phone companies (e.g. SoftBank, DoCoMo).
18) If you have to ask…
